Kiruna Vintage Tramway
|Kiruna museispårväg (Order # TAM01)
A film about the last day in service before the shut-down of the vintage
tramway in Kiruna. The tramway club of Kiruna, SIK operated the 1.6 km long, 1,000 mm
gauge vintage tramway 1984–1993.
The worlds most northern tramway was opened 1907 in Kiruna. The mining
company LKAB (Luossavaara–Kirunavaara AB) built the tramway so their workers
could easily commute between work and home. But times change and 1958 the
tramway shut down. The trams were getting old and cars had become more common.
Kiruna was severely affected by the depression in the beginning of the 1980’s. The tramway club of Kiruna was founded 1982 and they had an idea to gather and restore some of the remaining trams. With the aid of unemployed people in a regional program some trams could swiftly be restored and a 1.6 km long tramway was built in a new place in the southwest part of Kiruna. It was partly built on LKAB’s grounds.
10 years later the decision to build on LKAB’s grounds greatly contributed to the tramway shut-down. LKAB planed to enlarge their mining area and the tramway would then come to lie in the risk area. With fewer and fewer active members in the society they decided that 1993 was going to be the last season in operation.
In this film you get to come along on a trip on the tramways last day. On the return trip you get to see the line from the cab, from the end halt Industriområdet, the meeting station Zenobia to the end halt Ön.
